Huge fire which destroyed barn extinguished after burning for 19 hours

Fire crews fought a blaze, which burned for around 19 hours, at a barn containing around 1,000 tonnes of hay.

County Durham & Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) were first called to the barn blaze, behind the Durham Fire Station in Lanchester Road, at around 10.20pm on Tuesday, June 23.

After working through the night, firefighters remained on the scene on Wednesday, June 24 – with a spokeswoman for the service confirming that the fire was burning under control, and was expected to do so for 12 hours.

It was confirmed to the Echo on Thursday, June 25 that the official stop message from the scene of the fire came at around 5pm on Wednesday – around 19 hours on from the first call-out.

The CDDFRS spokeswoman added: “One appliance from Durham and Durham’s Targeted Response Vehicle were in attendance at the time.

“Durham returned twice afterward to check that the fire didn’t ignite again, the last visit was at 7pm on Wednesday.”

Shocking pictures taken at the height of the fire showed huge flames engulfing the structure, as firefighters battled on to bring the blaze under control.

Appliances from Durham, Spennymoor and Darlington were called out to the blaze when it began, with a crew from Consett present at the scene on Wednesday.

A statement from the service on social media added: “The cause of the fire is unknown with any investigation into the cause taking place once the fire has been extinguished.”
