The overhaul is being made in response to ‘changing travel patterns’, according to travel operator Go North East.

The firm insists this will mean its services continue to ‘meet the demand for where the majority of passengers wish to travel’.

Changes to timetables include:

Coaster 1 and 1A

Some journeys will be extended to Metrocentre, running between Gateshead and Metrocentre via Lobley Hill, Malvern Gardens and Knightside Gardens to replace the number 11 service – these journeys will be numbered 1A.

On a Sunday, some journeys will run via Cragside Gardens instead of Malvern Gardens, to replace service 11A – these will be numbered 1B.
