Bellway Durham, which has its regional head office in Houghton-le-Spring, has contributed £250 to help the Space4 community project feed those in need in the local area.

The project is run by a paid co-ordinator and 30 volunteers from St Michael and All Angels Church in Houghton-le-Spring and operates their community foodbank from the ground floor of Kepier Hall.

Justine Merton-Scott, Manager at Space4, said: “We know a lot of people in the area are struggling due to the ongoing cost of living crisis and the numbers accessing our community food store and foodbank have risen significantly in the past few months. Donations like this are vital to help us meet that increasing demand and we are very grateful to Bellway Homes for their generosity.”

Bellway Durham has also previously supported Hartlepool Foodbank, which provides food for about 150 people a week in the town. Last September, the housebuilder gave £200 to the charity, which was used to buy food supplies to help replenish the foodbank’s stock.

Oliver Wray, Sales Manager at Bellway Durham, said: “Space4 comprises an incredible group of people who provide an invaluable number of services which help some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

“We are pleased to hear that our donation will go towards buying supplies to make up emergency parcels that are given to people who just don’t have the means to put enough food on the table.

“The handing out of free food is a very important element of the support the volunteers offer but we know they also provide a safe space and a listening ear in times of need, as well as signposting people to other services which they may be able to access.

“At Bellway Durham, we take our social responsibilities very seriously and are always looking to support and form meaningful relationships with charities which help improve the lives of people in the local community.”
