House cordoned off by police following late-night fire

Emergency services were called to a fire in a kitchen on Rosedale Terrace shortly after 10.10pm on Thursday.

Nearby residents in the street have said they heard an ‘explosion’.

An investigation into the incident has been launched and a police cordon remains in place at the house on Friday morning (July 3).

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue service has confirmed three fire engines were called to a fire in the kitchen of a single storey house.

A spokeswoman for the brigade said: “”One adult male was accounted for. There were four breathing apparatus and positive pressure ventilation in use.

Police and ambulance also attended. The stop call came in at 10.43pm.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We were called at 10.10pm on Thursday, July 2, to a fire at a private address on Rosedale Terrace in Peterlee.

“We dispatched a double crewed ambulance, a specialist paramedic and one of our hazardous area response teams and also requested support from the fire service.”

No information is currently available regarding if anyone was injured in the fire.

Former mayor of Peterlee, Mary Cartwright, who lives nearby, said: “I hope everyone involved is OK. I'm Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator and I try to keep an eye out for all the residents.

“I didn’t hear an explosion but my dogs did, they jumped up and were quivering.

“My neighbour must have heard it as she shouted over the back fence.

“I looked out the front and saw the flashing lights.”

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
