Houghton Snooker Club cordoned off after suspected gas explosion

Fire rescue crews worked together to deal with a suspected gas explosion in the early hours of the morning.

At around 12.05am, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue service received a call with reports of a fire on Newbottle Street in Houghton.

Crews from both Rainton Bridge and Farringdon fire stations were sent to the scene located at a commercial property on the road.

The cause has been described by a member of the fire service as “a suspected gas explosion.”

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue service said: “Crews left the incident in the hands of a gas and structural engineer.

“Thankfully no-one was injured.”

Fire fighters left the scene at around 1.30am and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue service confirmed to the Echo that this incident is now being dealt with by officers at Northumbria Police.
