Houghton - Down Your Way

Houghton Round Table is holding a Marchesi Dinner in Chilton Country Hotel at 7.30pm on Friday, to commemorate the memory of Norwich Lawyer Louis Marchesi, who founded the movement in 1927 for young businessmen up to the age of 40 and the Houghton Club was number 589 when chartered in 1958. The night will include a four-course dinner with complimentary whisky and commemorative gift, and entertainment will be provided by star comedian Gary Marshall and Houghton Brass Band. Dress is black tie formal and tickets are Â£30, available by phoning John Price on 5846726 and visitors are most welcome.

The Reverend Alf Waite will entertain his colleagues in Houghton Older Peoples Enterprise with another Going to the Pictures in the Methodist Church hall at 1pm on Thursday.

There will be a coffee morning with home baking and art display in Penshaw Village from 10.30am on Saturday. Entrance is free and a cake and cuppa is available for £1.50 with proceeds to All Saints Church in Penshaw Village.

Neville Turner, a retired vet from Yorkshire, will give a talk about Our Four Legged Friends at Gilpin Women’s Institute in St Michael’s Kepier Hall at 1.30pm on Thursday, February 4, and visitors are most welcome.

Houghton Methodist Tuesday Fellowship enjoyed the welcome return of former Circuit Superintendent Minister the Reverend John McAdam, now in retirement on North Tyneside, with a talk It’s All About Faith.

Speaker at Houghton Methodists Men’s Fellowship was Sunderland Historian Philip Curtis with a collection of old Houghton photographs which he enlisted club members help in identifying.

At the Rotary Club monthly business meeting in the Chilton Country Hotel dates of the future programme were confirmed including the annual internal games night with Round Table and past Round Tablers for the Bill Curry Trophy on Wednesday, February 10. The second round of the district quiz competition against Consett Rotary Club at Consett Golf Club on Thursday, February 11, and the annual St George’s Day dinner in the Chillton on Saturday, April 23.
