Houghton - Down Your Way

Houghton U3A (University of the 3rd Age) is now nearly one year old and the organisation for retired or semi-retired people has grown steadily with groups of specific interests. The latest is a French group, a ukelele group and a local history group, and all groups would welcome more members.The next meeting will be in the Welfare Hall of the sports complex from 2pm to 4pm on Tuesday, February 16, when the speaker will be from the Durham Wildlife Trust. There will be a Shrove Tuesday Social Evening at Shiney Row St Oswald’s at 7pm tonight, including a pie and peas supper and entertainment by Tony Washington. Tickets cost £4. Phone 3854815 for details.

Christa Clemenson will display Pictures of India in her talk to Houghton Older People’s Enterprise in the Methodists Church hall at 1pm on Thursday.

Family activities will take place during the schools half term week at SHARP (Shiney Advice and Resource Project). Activities will include: Monday, February 15, from 2pm to 4pm join in Under The Sea fun making Socto Pusses and fish finger buns with fries. On Wednesday, February 17, from 2pm to 4pm you can take part in Wigwams and War Paint, making teepee toasties, rain sticks and Indian head dresses. Circuit Superintendent Minister the Reverend Alf Waite spoke to Houghton Methodist Women’s Fellowship on How special you are to God and to be his people.

At the Rotary Club, member Len Aitchison tested his colleagues with a quiz where all the answers related to Scotland. The club quiz team is away to Consett Rotary Club at Consett Gold Club on Thursday, in the second round of the District 1030 competition.

The Reverend Alf Waite spoke to Sunniside Methodists Men’s Fellowship about the origins of five well known national companies rising from humble beginnings and their connections to the Methodist Church.

Maureen Simpson, from Murton, the regional representative of the Leprosy Mission, spoke to Houghton Methodist Tuesday Fellowship about the work of the charity and fundraising to help the unfortunate sufferers.
