Houghton - Down Your Way

The Rotary Club has donated £600 from its community service funds, raised from various social events and the successful St George's dinner, to 1st Houghton St Michael's Scouts. Scout Group Leader Paul Sutherland expressed grateful thanks for the gift which will be used to buy equipment, replacing some very old kit, and to enable Scouts and Explorer SCouts to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Chief Scouts Awards and The Queen's Scout Awards. The Houghton Scout District provides support to seven Scout groups of young people, aged from six to 18. The new equipment should serve them for future years. St George is the patron saint of the National Scout Movement.

St Aidan’s Christian Centre, New Herrington, will commemorate The Battle of the Somme at 6.30pm on Thursday, June 30, outside on the green, between Lanton Street and Fenton Street, where many families received the dreaded notice of casualties to their loved ones serving in the forces between July 1, 1916, and November 18, 1916, when thousands of troops were killed. There will be a display in the centre from 10am to noon on Saturday, July 2, with information about the casualties on the war memorial. Coffee, tea and light refreshments will be available.

Instead of their regular meeting in the Methodist Church hall on Thursday, members will have an outing to the Causey Arch Hotel for a three-course meal and entertainment, costing £23.

Instead of their regular meeting in Kepier Hall, St Michael’s Parish Mothers’ Union will be having their annual outing to Ripon and Skipton, with the coach leaving The Archway at 9am on Monday, June 27.

Monument View Churches Together will be holding another of its popular quizzes at Shiney Row St Oswald’s at 7pm on Tuesday, June 28. Admission is £4.

The Sunderland Group of the Ramblers’ Association will be walking around Quarrington Hill on Wednesday, June 29. Details of time and meeting place from leader Dennis Borley on 5286966.

Speaker at Houghton Methodist Women’s Fellowship was Sue Elsey, a reader at St Michael and All Angels’ Parish Church about finding our place in church, the nation and the world.

Mrs McKinley, a coalfields officer, spoke to East Rainton Friendship about the purpose and the work of the organisation helping in the area. The club outing will be to Skipton on Friday and the next meeting on Tuesday, July 12, will be a party celebrating the birthday of the club.

Sunniside Methodist Women’s Fellowship rounded off the season with a meal out at the Wild Boar pub restaurant and will resume activities on Tuesday, September 6.

The Rotary Club held its annual assembly meeting, where incoming president Iain Anderson and the new officers and events organisers for the year, commencing on July 1, gave their proposals for the programme, which included the traditional ox roasting at Houghton Feast and support schools, senior citizens and other worthy causes.

At the last meeting of Gilpin WI, members enjoyed a talk on Beamish Museum illustrating the wonderful progress from its beginnings up to the present day. Visitors will be welcome at the next meeting to be held in Kepier Hall on July 7 at 1.30pm. There will be a talk by Katie Chaplin e on Japan Crafts.

Kepier Academy will having a summer fair on Sunday, July 10, from 11am to 2pm. It is looking for businesses which may wish to have a stall on the day. There will also be a car boot sale. If anyone would like to book a space for either of these, email [email protected] or telephone on 0191 5128960.
