At the Rotary Club dinner with wives and friends held in the Chilton Country Hotel, the speaker was retired air traffic controller Steve Cox, a member of The Guild for Air Traffic Officers, who spoke about the work of airport controllers throughout the world, and some of the emergency situations and other interesting events, including guiding members of the royal family during his career. Rotary President Ashley Burland presented Steve with a cheque for £100 for his nominated charity '˜Myaware' to which he contributes his speaker's fee.

Sunderland Historian Philip Curtis will give an illustrated talk about ‘Sunderland in 1966’ to Houghton Older People’s Enterprise in the Methodists Church hall at 1pm on Thursday.

The next surgery by Shiney Row councillors Anne Lawson, Mel Speding and Geoff Walker will be in Trinity Methodists Church hall from 10am to 11am on Saturday. All residents are welcome.

Houghton and District Rambling Club will be walking around Scarborough on Sunday. The coach will leave the Broadway in front of St Michael’s Parish Church at 8.30am. Further details from leader John Roughtledge on 5286966 or secretary John Condor on 3856551.

Shiney Row St Oswald’s Church will be having holding its harvest supper and raffle with entertainment by Paul Vincent at 7pm on Monday, October 3, in the church hall. Visitors are welcome.

A new karate club will be starting on Tuesday, October 4, at the Hougon Sports Centre, from 7pm to 8pm, suitable for all ages and abilities. For more information, contact Rebecca Potts on 07979538992.

Age UK Sunderland will be hostings its Queen of Eventide afternoon tea on Wednesday, October 5, from 2pm to 3.30pm (doors open at 1.30pm) at Houghton Miners’ Welfare Hall. Tickets are £3, available from Karen McKinney on 526 9274. Afternoon tea will be provided by Edinburg Bakery and entertainment by Ron Spence. It is being sponsored by a Community Chest grant.

The Sunderland Group of the Ramblers’ Association will be walking the Riding Mill Circular of about nine miles, meeting at the railway station NE44 6EN at 10.30am on Wednesday, October 5. Leader will be Dennis Borley, who can be contacted on 4920029 for further details.

The importance of saying Thank You seems to have been the theme around Methodist circles this week, with Judy Tasker giving a talk on the subject to Houghton Methodist Women’s Fellowship. Circuit Superintendent the Reverend Alf Waite had a similar theme at Sunniside Methodist Women’s Fellowship communion service.

There will be a coffee morning at St Mary’s Church, West Rainton, from 10am to noon on Saturday, with the usual variety of stalls and raffle.
