The Shiney Row Christmas events start with a seasonal market on Westbourne Terrace from noon to 6pm on Thursday, December 1, and includes performances by the Karen Sheil School of Dancing with a local school choir. The festive lights will be switched on at 4pm and there will be arts and crafts and Santa in his grotto in the Trinity Methodist Church Hall from 5pm. The events are free for all the family. On Thursday, November 4, Kepier WI held its AGM in Kepier Hall. Comprehensive reports from president Marian Ferguson, secretary Win Warren and treasurer Elsie Clayton, conveyed to members how very successful in every respect the past year has been. Thanks were expressed to all who had helped to make it so. After the business, Linda King entertained members with a humorous presentation entitled ‘Pervs, Pedagogues and Prostitutes.’ During the month members have enjoyed another pleasant and sunny walk with lunch to follow, this time by the riverside in Durham. Finally, members took part in the Remembrance Sunday Service when President Marian Ferguson and Lynn Race, laid a poppy wreath on behalf of the WI. Next month’s meeting will take place in Kepier Hall at 1.30pm on Thursday, December 1, when there will be the Christmas party and entertainment. Visitors are welcome.

Christmas fairs taking place on Saturday, all with the usual seasonal stalls, attractions, refreshments and visits from Santa are: St Michael and All Angels Parish Church on the Broadway from 10am to 3pm. Racecourse Community Association, Burdon Avenue from noon. Newbottle St Matthew’s Church from 2pm. All the events have free admission.

Houghton Racecourse Community Association in Burdon Avenue will be holding its annual Christmas party in the centre at 7pm on Monday, December 5, featuring popular singer Holly Wood. Tickets are £6, obtainable by phoning Ann on 5847973.

Musical Group Harmony 4U will provide the entertainment at Houghton Older People’s Enterprise in the Methodist Church hall at 1pm on Thursday. Please note there is no meeting on Thursday, December 1.

Houghton and District Ramblers’ Club will be walking around Alston on Sunday with the coach leaving the Broadway, in front of St Michael’s Church, at 8.30am. Further details from leader T Wilkinson on 5842488 or secretary John Condorn on 385 6551.

The Sunderland Group of the Ramblers’ Association will be walking around Watergate Forest Park, about eight miles, meeting with leader John Routledge at 10.30am on Wednesday, November 30, in the park car park, off the A692 Whickham Highway (NE11 9RR). Phone John on 528 6966 for further details.

At Sunniside Methodist Men’s Fellowship member Bill Hartburn gave an illustrated talk about recent holidays and church events.

Roger Grant, from Hetton, spoke to Houghton Methodists Women’s Fellowship about ‘Recognising People’ when you are not sure and highlighted times when Jesus was in this position and the example if showed in the situation.

District Chairman of Inner Wheel North East Wendy Jackson, from Blyth, spoke to the Houghton Club in Rainton Meadows Information Centre about her life and career leading up to her appointment and her proposed programme of service for her year in office.

Methodist Circuit Assistant Minister the Reverend Steven Hill spoke to Sunniside Methodist Women’s Fellowship with is interpretation of the significance of ‘The call of the first disciples’.
