Houghton - Down Your Way

The magnificent display of nativity cribs from around the world continues in Houghton Methodists Church in Rutland Street until Saturday. It can be viewed from 10am to 4pm on weekdays and 1pm to 4pm on Sundays with free admission. All are welcome.

Houghton Older People’s Enterprise will have a Christmas dinner served by Edinburgh Bakery in the Methodists Church at 1pm on Thursday, followed by entertainment from popular singer Ray Banks. After this the club takes a break and resumes on January 5.

Houghton and District Rambling Club will be holding its Christmas walk around Gilsland Spa on Sunday, December 11, with the coach leaving the Broadway in front of St Michael’s Parish Church at 10.30am. Further details from the secretary on 0191 385 6551.

The next meeting of the Friends of Rector Park is in the community room of St Michael’s Kepier Hall at 7pm on Tuesday, December 13.

Sunniside Methodists Women’s Fellowship will be holding its annual carol service in Springfield House care home on the evening of Tuesday, December 13.

The annual Ecumenical Carol Service by Monument View Churches Together, with music by Monkwearmouth Salvation Army Band, follwed by tea or coffee and mince pies, is in Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, New Penshaw, at 7.30pm, on Wednesday, December 14. All are welcome.

The Sunderland Group of the Ramblers’ Association will be doing a short Christmas party circular of about five miles. Meet opposite Biddick Wokingmen’s Club (NE38 8AJ) at 10.30am, on Wednesday, December 14.. The leaders are Bill and Gillian Darbyshire, and for more information call 0191 417 2797.

The Gilpin Singers Ladies’ Choir carol concert will be in St Michael and All Angels Parish Church at 11am on Wednesday, December 14, with refreshments served. Admission is £3.

The speaker at the latest Rotary Club meeting was member Geoff Pratt, recently returned from the United States, with an excellent illustrated talk entitled ‘Thanksgiving in Seattle’. It was about the history of the Thanksgiving celebration and a family reunion for the first time as Geoff’s wife Jeanne as American. Also it was his two sons were at the celebration.

The proceeds from the recent large raffle at the Rotary Club annual dinner, reported last week, has been divided to Parkinson UK, in memory of late member and district governor George Bennison, and Upper Teasdale Agricultural Support Services, the charity supported by Neville Turner, a vet from Bishop Auckland who spoke about ‘four-legged friends’ at the club dinner.

Members of Houghton Methodists Women’s Fellowship enjoyed ‘chair exercises’ with Sheila Hall from Hetton at their weekly meeting.

Houghton-le- Spring University of the Third Age (U3A) arranges activities for people who are retired or semi retired. Monthly meetings are every third Tuesday in the month at Houghton Welfare Hall.
