Hospice announced as official charity partner of Sunderland City 10k and half marathon

Everyone who signs up for this year’s Siglion Sunderland City Half Marathon and 10K is being given the opportunity to join the St Benedict’s Hospice team of runners, as well as the option to make a donation when entering.

As an official partner, St Benedict’s already has 50 guaranteed places on the races, but many more participants are expected to run for the charity on Sunday, May 7.

Initially based at the Havelock Hospital in Sunderland and then Monkwearmouth Hospital, St Benedict’s moved to a new, purpose-built hospice in Ryhope four years ago.

Run Sunderland founder Steve Cram said: “We feel that it’s really important to use our events to support local charities and St Benedict’s Hospice is a very deserving organisation that has touched the lives of many people on Wearside and in East Durham, where a large number of our runners live.

“The hospice has always booked charity places on the Sunderland events in the past, so we’re delighted to be able to build on the relationship, starting with this year’s Siglion Sunderland City Half Marathon and 10K.”

Catrina Flynn, fundraising manager at St Benedict’s, said: “As a very local and well-respected charity that serves the people of Wearside and East Durham, we are delighted to be associated with an event that promotes Sunderland and encourages people to come to the city.”
