Historic Sunderland sailworks set to become five-storey student accommodation centre

A derelict building could be altered to make way for accommodation for more than 70 students.

The former J Speeding and Co Sailworks in Monkwearmouth’s Whickham Street is set to become a five-storey structure, which would house space for 78 students, including facilities for those with disabilities.

The site is within close walking distance of Sunderland University’s St Peter’s Campus.

Roker-based Fitz Architects is the company behind the plans and says that the project “will utilise a high quality material palette and is a contemporary design aimed at students”.

A consultation over the plans ends on Monday, February 15, with a decision over whether to approve them set to be made this April.

The proposals can be seen on Sunderland City Council’s planning portal.
