Historic Sunderland pub front to be restored as former JJB Sports store to be transformed into new bar
Plans to transform a former city centre sports store into a bar - and restore an historic Sunderland pub front to its former glories - have been given the go ahead by council bosses.
Earlier this year, a ‘change of use’ bid was lodged for Sunderland’s old JJB Sports store in High Street West.
Roxborough Plant SSAS submitted the full application and also plan to submit a separate bid for new signage.
When it opens, the pub could create 15 full-time and 15 part-time jobs.
Sunderland City Council planners gave the go ahead to the plans on on Tuesday, November 13.
And a heritage statement, submitted to the council, outlines plans to give the building a new lease of life.
As part of the revamp, “eyesore” metal cladding will be removed alongside works to improve original windows and brickwork at the front of the building.
And at the side of the building, in Pann Lane, an ornate historic pub front will be “restored to its previous grandeur”with new glass installed to windows.
This will be bordered, on both sides, by new timber shop fronts and signage for the new pub.
The heritage statement adds: “The new shop front has been designed in a traditional fashion and will reinforce and improve the historic character of the street.
“The signage to the shop front will also be designed and installed in such a way that it is sympathetic to traditional methods.”
Sunderland City Council planning officers praised the plans in a report, describing the historic pub front as a “hidden gem”.
They added the pub plans would “enliven the high street” and provide links to night time economy such as the Minster Quarter and Sunniside.
Agreed opening hours would be 9am to 11pm, Monday to Saturday and 11am to 10.30pm on Sundays and bank holidays.
Planning conditions also require the developer to submit a noise assessment which must be approved before the pub can open.
The applicant was contacted for comment.
