Hetton - Down Your Way

Members of the Women's Auxiliary of Hetton IM Church celebrated their Centenary Rally on Monday, October 17. The meeting was led by Dorothy Rogers and was opened with a special poem, written by Winnie Thompson. The ladies sang a song also written by Winnie Thompson and Georgina Smith sang a solo. During the service a carafe, donated by the WA, was dedicated to the church and a special cake was cut by Julie Newton and Jean Anderson. The speaker was Marion Frame, who gave us a great message about running the race as a team. Afterwards we all shared in a delicious tea. A great big thank you is extended to everyone who worked so hard to make this a special day.

Eppleton Academy Primary and Hetton Lyons Primary Schools sent pupils from their gardening and Eco clubs to take part in a continuation of the Friends of Hetton Lyons Country Park’s Silver Links Project, which began last year, to mark its 25th anniversary. The aims of the project are to create visual impact and interest in various sections, to encourage visitors to use differing trails and areas, thereby ensuring greater usage of the park area. The first area to receive bulbs in 2015 was a copse near the children’s play area, with all three local primary schools assisting in making this area into a ‘bluebell wood’, while adding snowdrops and other wildflowers for extra interest. The second area to be planted with wildflowers was the grass slopes between Stephenson Lake and Blossom Pond. On October 9, the third phase of the project involved the planting of bluebells near Blossom Pond and the creation of a Daffodil Walk alongside the wildflower meadow activity trail. Shirley Carr, Friends of HLCP, said: “One of our main aims is to encourage young children to appreciate and protect the area for future generations. We were thrilled that the local schools have continued to take part in this project. Their enthusiasm has been fabulous and the children are very keen to make return visits with their parents to the country park next spring to see the fruits of their hard work. We can’t thank all involved enough for creating our second area of English Bluebells and a Daffodil walk which everyone can enjoy for years to come.” If anyone is interested in helping the park, go along to the AGM and meeting on Thursday from 5.45pm to 6.45pm at the Hetton Centre or contact Shirley Carr on 0191 5267838 for more information.
