East Herrington Townswomen's Guild will meet tonight in St Chad's Church hall at 7pm to celebrate the guild's 50th birthday. The entertainment will be provided by Ray Banks and will be followed by a buffet supper. The next guild walk will be on Tuesday, July 19, meet at the Board Inn at 10am for a walk along the river past the Glass Centre to the Marina. Jean Brown will be taking names for a trip to Barnard Castle on July 20 with a meal in Bowes village hall provided by the ladies of Bowes Women's Institute.

Lakeside residents wondering how to help the injured swan.

The residents of Knightsbride, Lakeside Village, had an unusual emergency to deal with recently when they came to the aid of a swan that had collided with a lamppost. A loud bang brought residents running from their homes to find a dazed swan sitting in the middle of the road. It was clear that the bird was hurt and unable to move. One resident, Margaret, knew exactly what to do and grabbing its beak and placing another arm under its body carried it home and placed it in a cage until the RSPCA could collect it. The swan’s injuries were treated and once well it was released back into the lake at Silksworth to the delight of all the residents.

St Chads Ward Councillors, Stuart Porthouse and Gillian Galbraith will hold their monthly ward surgeries on Wednesday, July 20, from 3.30pm to 4.30pm, in then meeting room, Farringdon Primary Inspire MAT School, Archer Road, and 5pm to 6pm in Methodist Chapel, Crow Lane.
