Centuries of tradition are giving way at the Herrington village show. Leek growing often an obsession with miners and carried on by enthusiastic gardeners over the last few decades is finally giving way. Leslie Scott said: 'Our Leek Club could not sustain itself so after last year's show we disbanded. However, we want to maintain interest in gardening, especially the growing of vegetables so we have come up with a new challenge.

The test is to present five different vegetables in a table-top display. We have set up prize money of £100 for the first three places. This challenge is open to all and we are encouraging joint entries as its not that easy to get five different vegetables up to show quality. We cannot accept more than 12 stands as we have a space problem at the show.” Exhibitors need to contact the show secretary on 0191 528 0580 and register their interest and get the detailed schedule and rules. The show will be held at the Scout Hut in Crow Lane, Middle Herrington, on Saturday, September 3. The show will feature cookery, craft, photography and embroidery sections and a special group for children’s craft.

Herrington Women’s Institute is holding its annual charity coffee morning on Wednesday, August 3, at St Chad’s Church hall, East Herrington, from 10am to noon. The charity to benefit from this event is the Sunderland Autism Outreach Team. Admission is £2.50 which includes coffee and a strawberry scone. There will be produce and craft stalls. Raffle and tombola. Everyone is welcome.

Herrington Townswomen’s Guild and guests had a lovely day at Barnard Castle, then went for afternoon tea with the ladies from Bowes Village WI. A lovely tea was provided and a pleasant time was had with some lovely ladies.

Aaliyah Dewer, who has been training at two of Paula Sumner’s clubs, recently gained her 3rd Dan. Holy Rosary and Thorney Close Karate Clubs meet at Holy Rosary Church on Mondays from 5pm to 6pm and in Thorney Close Enterprise Centre on Fridays from 5pm to 6pm. St Chad’s Holiday Club will be running throughout the summer holidays. Sessions are free with a free healthy meal available to all school-age children, five to 16 years (children under eight must be accompanied by an adult). The first session started yesterday. Today there will be sport activities from 3pm to 5pm on the field opposite Farringdon Park and on Friday there will be environmental activities, 10am to 1.30pm, meet at the main entrance to Farringdon Community School.
