The next Lovell Lecture will be held on Monday, February 29, from 1pm to 3pm at the Donnison School, Church Walk. Speaker will be Jack Curtis talking about The Old Barracks: Sunderland. Entrance is £3 and members £2.50, which includes refreshments.

Create a fire monkey split–pin puppet at Sunderland City Library tomorrow from 2.30pm to 3.30pm, with professional Kit Kingsbury. Booking is essential as places are limited. On Friday from 2.30pm to 3.30pm, make a concertina fan to take home. These activities are free and suitable for all ages but children under eight years must be supervised by an adult.

Sunderland Antiquarian Society’s next meeting at St George’s United Reformed Church, on the corner of Stockton Road and Belvedere Road, is tonight at 7.30pm. Doors open at 7.15pm. The modern buildings of Sunderland – the good, the bad and the ugly is the title of Michael Johnson’s talk.

A friendly Bridge Club is looking for new members. It meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1pm to 4.30pm in the lounge of Beaumont Lodge, Toward Road. Partners are not needed and further information is available on 0191 5971941.

A toddler group meets on Tuesdays in Sunderland Minster from 9.30am to 11.30am. Refreshments are available.

Sunderland Maritime Heritage will be open to the public every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am-4pm. Admissions is free. During the winter period it is closed on Saturdays. Go along to the visitor centre on Church Street East to see the extensive library and large scale replica of HMS Venerable plus the work recreating a double capstan, the like of which has not been seen on Wearside for more than 200 years. All are welcome.

Sunderland Antiquarian Society Archives at the Sunderland Antiquarian and Heritage Centre, 6 Douro Terrace, is open for research on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9.30am to noon.
