Sunderland Old Township Heritage Society's faithful attendees attended this year's Rector Gray memorial service at his graveside in the memorial gardens despite occasional showers. The service was led by Father Andrew of St Ignatius Church. Flowers were provided by Bill Dove, and welcome warm refreshments were served afterwards in Donnison School .

At their AGM last week The Friends of Sunderland Museums elected Ashley Sutherland as their chairman, to replace Elsie Ronald, who was standing down after 10 years in the post.

The next Lovell Lecture will be held on Monday, February 29, from 1pm – 3pm at the Donnison School, Church Walk. Speaker Jack Curtis will be talking about The Old Barracks: Sunderland. Entrance is £3, members £2.50, which includes refreshments.

Sunderland Pianoforte Society will meet in the Sunderland Pottery Room at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, Burdon Road, on Tuesday, March 8, for its 442nd recital at 7.15pm with Dario Llanos Javierre. Full subscription (6 recitals) £60, individual recitals £12.50, accompanied children (16 and under) free, full-time students and those in receipt of benefit £6. The next Sunderland University public lecture at the Murray Library Lecture Theatre will be given by Sir Peter Bazalgette, Chairman of Arts Council England, who will speak on Why We Invest Public Money in Arts and Culture tomorrow at 6.30pm. Tickets are free, available from the university online store or by ringing 5153265.

Sunderland Antiquarian Society Archives at the Sunderland Antiquarian and Heritage Centre, 6 Douro Terrace is now open for research on Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays from 9.30am to noon. Note the new opening day, Fridays.
