Sunderland Antiquarian Society's next meeting at St George's United Reformed Church, on the corner of Stockton Road and Belvedere Road, wull be on Tuesday, June 21, at 7pm. Speaker Bernard Hope will talk about Eddie Chapman '“ North East Double Agent.

The Big Friendly Read is a summer reading challenge and young volunteers, aged 13 and over, with spare time over the summer break are wanted to help support library staff. There will be the opportunity to make new friends, build your confidence and gain valuable skills for your CV. The National Summer Reading Challenge starts on Saturday, July 16, in libraries across Sunderland. The Donnison School summer fair – the First World War Remembered – takes place on Saturday, June 25, from 11am to 4pm at the Donnison School Heritage and Education Centre. Go along and enjoy this traditional fair with all the family and share in the First World War commemoration. Stalls will include local cards and prints, jewellery, bric-a-brac, books, toys and homemade cakes. Activities will include music and entertainment, fashion of the day and First World War exhibition, children’s games, tug of war, garden draughts, coconut shy, tombola, races, raffle, bottle tombola, crafts and tea room.

Sunderland Old Township Heritage Society will hold a memorial service on Thursday at 11am in Mowbray Park beside the statue of The Victoria Hall Disaster in which 183 children died on June 16, 1883. The Victoria Hall was a large concert hall on Toward Road facing onto Mowbray Park.

Hendon Community Association, based in Seafarers Way, Moor Terrace, runs a drop-in luncheon club on Tuesday and Thursday, open from 8.30am to 3.30pm. Bingo is played on Mondays from 6.30pm to 9.30pm (over 18s). For further information, ring 0191 565 5648.

Sunderland Antiquarian Society Archives at the Sunderland Antiquarian and Heritage Centre,6 Douro Terrace is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, from 9.30am to noon.
