There will be a Hendon Board School reunion on Wednesday, August 10, from 7pm until late in the Gunners Club, Mary Street. There will be a free buffet. For more information, ring Cath on 514 4287.

The next Plays in the Park will be George and the Dragon, which will be performed in Mowbray Park on Saturday at 5pm and on Sunday at 11am, 2pm and 5pm. The event starts at the Museum and Winter Gardens.

Hendon History Group talk will be The Folk of Hendon by speaker Pauline Hilton on Thursday at 6.30pm in the Carnegie Community Corner (the former Hendon Library Villette Road).

Sunderland Antiquarian Society Archives at the Sunderland Antiquarian and Heritage Centre, 6 Douro Terrace are currently open for research on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9.30am to noon.

There will be a Princess Picnic at the Canny Space Holy Trinity Church, East End, on Thursday from 1.30pm to 3pm. Princess Belle will be telling stories in the oldest library in Sunderland at 1.30pm and 2.15pm. There is no need to book, just pay on the gate on the day, £4 per child with accompanying adults free. Take your own picnic blanket, food and drink. Dressing up is encouraged and boys and girls are really welcome to go along and join Princesses Belle, Rapunzel and Cinderella for an afternoon of dancing, stories and songs.

Drop-in sessions are held at the YMCA Centre at 2-3 Toward Road every Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm offering advice on the types of accommodation at the YMCA for 16 to 35-year-olds. You can also ring on 0191 567 6160 for advice.

Hendon Community Association, based in Seafarers Way, Moor Terrace, runs a drop-in luncheon club on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8.30am to 3.30pm. Bingo is held on Mondays from 6.30pm to 9.30pm (over 18s). For further information, ring 0191 5655648.

Sunderland Maritime Heritage Centre, 2 Church Street East, is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am to 4pm. Go along to hear about its plans for the future while having a free cup of tea or coffee and new volunteers are welcome. Entry is free. The group would also like to thank all those who have donated artefacts which will enable them to authenticate their shipyard experiences for school visits. Has anyone got a pewter model of a SD14, (these were given to all Pickersgill workers) that you would like to loan or donate. Don’t forget to look in your attics and have a good clear out.
