Sunderland Civic Society will meet at Age UK the Bradbury Centre, Stockton Road, on Thursday at 6pm. Speaker will be Allan White, of Tunstall Hills Protection Group. Visitors are welcome to the talk, with entrance £1.

Sunderland Old Parish Church of the Holy Trinity in the East End is holding a dedication service in the church on Saturday at 3pm. Refreshments will be served afterwards. Plans for the future use of the church will also be on show. All are welcome.

Sunderland Minster, High Street West, will be open as part of the Heritage Open Days event on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9am to 3pm each day, and on Sunday from 10am to 2pm. The Minster Church of St Michael and All Angels and St Benedict Biscop dates back to c940AD. It formerly served the ancient parish of Bishopwearmouth, but since 2007 the Minster has been an extra-parochial place of worship serving the whole City.

An exhibition by Sunderland Antiquarian Society highlighting Sunderland’s long history of industry from glassmaking to coal mining and from shipbuilding to papermaking will be open to view at its base in 6 Duoro Terrace, on Saturday from 10am to 2pm.

Donnison School Heritage and Education Centre, Church Walk is a Georgian schoolroom that dates from 1798 and is adjoined by a 1827 Headmistress School House. Visitors can meet the schoolmistress and take part in a Victorian lesson as well as enjoy a guided tour of the site, including a walled Victorian Secret Garden as part of the Heritage Weekend events. It will be open on Thursday, September 8, and Friday, September 9, from 10.30am to 4pm, on Saturday, September 10, from 10am to 4pm and Sunday, September 11, from 10.30am to 4pm. Refreshments will be available.

Go along and see the interior of the impressive Victorian Parish Church of St Ignatius the Martyr in Hendon. This church was designed by C Hodgson Fowler and built in the Early English style, completed in 1889. Notable features include richly carved stone reredos and beautiful stained glass by Burlison and Grylls. It will be on Thursday, September 8, from 10am to 4pm, Friday, September 9, from noon to 4pm, Saturday, September 10, from 10am to 5pm and Sunday, September 11, from 11.30am to 1pm.

Eden Cafe has reopened inside Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4.30pm and Sunday, 2pm to 4pm. Friends of Sunderland Museum will receive 10% discount on production of their membership card.

Book afternoon tea for you and your friends (six or over) for a celebration in Donnison School, a Grade II listed building. A few places are available on Wednesday, August 31. Sunderland Antiquarian Society Archives at the Sunderland Antiquarian and Heritage Centre, 6 Douro Terrace are open for research on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9.30am to noon.

Hendon Community Association, Seafarers Way, Moor Terrace, runs a drop-in luncheon club on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8.30am to 3.30pm. There is bingo on a Monday from 6.30pm to 9.30pm (over 18s). For further information, ring 0191 5655648.

Sunderland Maritime Heritage Centre, 2 Church Street East, is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free. Go along to hear about the plans for the centre while having free cup of tea or coffee. Who knows you may end up being one of its volunteer workers. Volunteers would like to thank everyone for all the donations of artefacts which will enable them to authenticate the shipyard experiences for school visits.
