Heartstrings' Pop Recs debut

For the first time, the five-piece will take to the stage at the new Pop Recs in Stockton Road, which opened in November, after members of the public donated more than £14,000 via a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign to support the venture.

Though the new record shop has hosted names including Frank Turner, the band, who founded the record shop, will make their debut on Saturday.

They’ll be performing tracks from a double A-side vinyl record, which will be released on the same day to mark Record Store Day, a national drive to encourage people to use and celebrate independent music shops.

In a nod to Northern Soul, the new release features covers of The Night by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) by Frank Wilson.

Drummer Dave Harper said: “Although we rehearse here, we’ve not actually got round to playing in the shop yet. But it makes sense.

“We run a record shop, we’re in a band and we have a release coming out, so it seemed rude not to.”

The day will also include a live DJ throughout the day, as well as extra stock of limited-edition vinyls that are being released by bands to coincide with the event.

Live music will also include Rhys Patterson performing covers of celebrated folk artist Bert Jansch, as well as a performance by James Leonard Hewitson.

The new Pop Recs opened after the original base in Fawcett Street was sold to developers.

Entry for the Record Store Day gigs, which start from 7pm, is free.
