Pools were full value for the 33rd-minute lead when new signing Nathan Thomas's superb cross from the left was volleyed in by Scott Fenwick for his sixth goal of the season.

But Pools were forced back for the final 25 minutes by the promotion-chasers and it needed an incredible defensive effort from the home side.

Thanks to a never-say-die effort and a little luck, Pools held out for their first League Two win since November 15.

It lifted Pools six points above second-bottom Yeovil Town, who lost 2-1 at Morecambe this afternoon.

“That’s the sort of win we love, where we grind it out," said Moore.

"It was a tough game that, Wycombe have the best record at the back in the league.

"It’s nice when players give their all and we had luck at times. For the last 20 minutes they threw the kitchen sink at us – the ball needed an Aspirin at the end of the game they thumped it that high and that long.

“We saw it out and it was a fantastic win.

"The last two games we played well here and lost, but today we got what we deserved."

There was a dream debut for Thomas, who supplied the cross for the winner and looked a danger throughout before limping off with a calf problem before the hour.

“Nathan did well," said Moore. "He had to come off with a tight calf but you could see what he's about with the goal, his movement and his cross and Scotty did brilliant to finish it."
