The Ye Olde Durhams Social Club on St Aiden’s Street in Hartlepool, marked the occasion with a family fun day featuring a range of activities to raise funds for military charity Help for Heroes.

Club secretary and organiser of the event, Joane Griggs, said the event raised over £300 for the charity which has a strong royal connection.

She said: “Over the course of the day we saw around 200 people turn out to take part in activities including a magic show, balloon modelling, craft fair and disco.

“We had two cakes donated by Angie’s Treats which we auctioned off and also held a raffle and tombola to raise funds.
“We decided to raise funds for Help for Heroes this year because the charity has a strong association with the Royal Family and many people who use the club have family in the forces.

“Next year we are celebrating 100 years as a club and we have always done a lot for charity, so wanted to tie in our Queen’s birthday celebrations with a charitable cause.
“The club committee paid for the event so all funds will be going to the charity.
“We also had people dressed up as characters like Elsa from Frozen which the kids particularly enjoyed.”

During the day two Hartlepool bands performed at Hartlepool Railway Station for rail passengers to mark the birthday celebration.

Organised by the Friends of Hartlepool Station, passengers enjoyed music for around two hours from the Ukulear Power Band and Hartlepool Community Choir.

Mike Anderson, secretary of the Friends of Hartlepool Station, said: “Flags were waved and passengers at Hartlepool railway station were royally entertained as they enjoyed a party atmosphere at the Queen’s 90th birthday celebration.

“The Friends would like to thank both groups for their voluntary participation and outstanding performances.”

Brownies from Hartlepool also held a street party at Hartlepool Sixth Form College to mark the day. Around 87 girls from the town gathered together to celebrate with a range of activities including circus skills, face painting, and balloon modelling.

Brownies also made their own crown and flag and bunting which was used to decorate the venue.
