Grass fire sends column of smoke visible for miles into air over East Rainton

Firefighters have tackled a grass fire which sent a column of black smoke hundreds of feet into the air over East Rainton.

A crew from Rainton Bridge fire station was called to the scene, close to Handley Crescent off the A690 Durham Road dual carriageway, shortly before 8.30pm this evening, Thursday, July 2.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “The call was at 20.20 and they were only there for about 20 minutes.”
