Sunderland Humanists will meet on the second Monday of every month at 6.30pm at Back on the Map building, former Hendon Branch Library, situated on the corner of Villette Road and Toward Road. They discuss issues of interest to Humanists and sometimes have guest speakers. The next meeting on February 8, will feature a talk by Ron Armstrong, of Jesmond Humanists, on Assisted Dying. The Sunderland Branch of Parkinson’s UK is holding its new year meal on Monday, February 8, at Bede Tower, on Burdon Road. Please note this meeting will be starting at 1pm, instead of the usual time of 2pm. There will be a two-course lunch, costing £5, after entertainment by the very funny Jeff Wright. The next Northumbria Police Pact meeting for St Michael’s Ward residents takes place at Auckland Homes, Hill View Road, on Tuesday, February 9, commencing at 6pm.

The next meeting of Friends of Backhouse Park and Barley Mow Park will be on Tuesday, February 9, at the Back on the Map Building, (former Hendon Branch Library, at 7pm.

St Nicholas Church hall, off Queen Alexandra Road, has been selected as the venue within St Michael’s ward for a new scheme which is to begin operating in all wards covered by the Council’s East Area Committee. Rooms within the hall will be used as the St Michael’s Hub, where carers can relax, enjoy a cup of coffee and a chat with people who share, understand and appreciate the pressures they face. Room bookings can also take place by support-based services to help connect the local community to their services. The scheme is funded by the East Area Committee and involves local ward Councillor Michael Dixon working with Stephanie Clark, from St Nicholas, and council officer Nicol Trueman. The first main meeting to get the scheme underway takes place at the Church Hall on Wednesday, February 3, from 10.30 am,until 12 noon. Various organisations with their own expertise have been invited along. Everyone is most welcome to call in.
