Carers who would welcome some time to relax and share time to socialise and enjoy the company of others in a similar situation, are invitated to come along to St Nicholas Church hall, Queen Alexandra Road, on Wednesday, March 2, from 10.30am to noon. Stephanie Clark (0191 5226444), vicar at St Nicholas, is the lead for a new council-funded project, which sees the church hall being used over the next 12 months as a welcoming Community Connector Hub, for people in and around St Michael's ward. Sunderland Rotary Club has recently joined with the Rotary Clubs of Seaburn and SR1, the latest club to be formed in the Northumberland/Durham District, to raise £1,000 to purchase a heart defibrillator for Sunderland St John Ambulance Brigade. This will be used for training members, many of whom are young, in its use, as well as being available, when necessary, for real life emergencies, wherever the Brigade is on duty. The Rotary Club offers car parking in the university car park for shopping and theatre-goers on Saturdays and for Sunderland Football home games. Parking costs £2 for the day and it all goes to local charities, from which members welcome approaches.

Blue Watch Youth Centre has begun running sessions for children aged nine to 11 on a Wednesday at Stannington Grove Community Centre, from 3.15pm to 5.30pm. For further details about these sessions and arrangements over the half-term holidays, contact Susan Ferguson on 0191 5214060.

St Michael’s Councillors, Michael Dixon, Margaret Forbes and Peter Wood, hold their next ward surgery at the Stannington Grove Community Centre, this Thursday from 10am to 11am.

Northumbria Police held its latest PACT meeting for St Michael’s Ward residents last week at Auckland Homes, Hill View Road, with the local Community Support Officer, Kash Dagg, Ashbrooke Resident’s Association, plus ward Councillors Michael Dixon and Peter Wood.

Thornholme Residents’ Association, chaired by Paul Baker, held its most recent meeting last week. Joining residents to discuss a variety of issues, including, crime, planning and parking, were local police officers, plus Councillors Michael Dixon, Margaret Forbes and Peter Wood, all St Michael’s ward and Iain Kay, Millfield Ward. The next meeting is to take place at Ashbrooke Sports Club, the usual venue, on Monday, March 14, at 6pm.

Friends of Backhouse Park and Barley Mow Park, chaired by Claire Wayman, met last week. Joining members were Daniel Krzyszczak, ICOS, Michael Fascia, Sunderland Council, plus St Michael’s ward Councillors, Michael Dixon and Peter Wood. Guest speaker was Chris Madine, a community scientist from Newcastle University, with whom the Friends have made contact for future projects. Various issues were discussed including funding from St Michael’s and Hendon Councillors, work in both parks and events for the year ahead. The next meeting is at the usual venue, the Back on the Map Building, Villette Road, and will be on Tuesday, March 8, at 7pm.
