Grangetown and Ashbrooke - Down Your Way

A party of students from St Aidan's Catholic Academy went to India last month to assist in an orphanage in Jangpura, a suburb of New Delhi, run by Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity.

Five of the students were successful in applying for assistance with their expenses to the Catenian Bursary Fund. They were presented with cheques during a mass celebrated by Father Martin Wheaton, of St Mary’s Church, Sunderland, in the Academy’s Chapel. The presentations were made by Brother Tony McCourt, a former head teacher of St Aidan’s, who is Schools Liaison Officer for Sunderland Catenian Circle, to three of the recipients, Matthew Morrell, Thomas Buckley and Aidan Fletcher. Two of the recipients were unable to attend. The Catenian Association is a Catholic Men’s Society, which established the bursary fund to encourage and assist Catholics, between the ages of 16 and 25, to actively involve themselves in projects for the benefit of the community at home or abroad involving the implementation of Christian, and particularly Catholic, principles.

The Sunderland Branch of Parkinson’s UK will be meeting at Bede Tower, Burdon Road, on Monday 14th March at 2pm, when they will be holding their AGM. If anyone would like to consider standing as a committee member, please contact the Secretary, Margaret, on 01913859234. All are welcome to attend.

The former parish priest of the Catholic parish of St Cecilia’s and St Patrick’s, Father Robert Kinlen will be returning to the city tomorrow for a presentation to him on behalf of parishioners and those of the neighbouring parish of St Patrick’s, Ryhope, which he also served. The event will take the form of a social evening with refreshments at the city’s Catholic Club and will start at 7 pm. Fr Kinlen left Sunderland in January to take charge of a parish in Tyne Dock, in his home town of South Shields.  His successor as parish priest is Father Marc Lyden-Smith, who also looks after the Catholic Church’s St Mary’s pastoral area in the city.

Thornholme Residents’ Association meet this coming, Monday, March 14, at Ashbrooke Sports Club, commencing 6pm.

St Michael’s Residents’ Association holds its latest meeting tomorrow at 6.30pm in the usual venue, Auckland Homes, Hill View Road.

St Michael’s ward Councillors, Michael Dixon, Margaret Forbes and Peter Wood, will hold their next ward surgery on Wednesday, March 16, in St Nicholas Church Hall, off Queen Alexandra Road/ Dunelm South, from 10am-11am

Ashmore Residents’ Association holds its next meeting tomorrow in the British Legion Club, Grange Crescent, at 7.30pm.

The next meeting of the Friends of Backhouse Park and Barley Mow Park will take place at the Back on the Map Building, ex-Hendon Branch Library, Villette Road, tonight at 7pm.
