Grangetown and Ashbrooke - Down Your Way

The Rotary Club of Sunderland and other local rotary clubs are organising the Hetton Dragon Boat Race and Summertime Festival at Hetton Country Lyons Park on Sunday, July 31, from 10am to 4pm. Entry to the park is free and free parking is provided. This is an ideal day out for all the family with lots of food, craft and gift stalls, entertainment and carnival rides. Traditional Chinese dragon boats will compete on Hetton Lake at this charity event with 15 or more teams taking part. Individual teams have their own charities. Money raised at the event will be donated to The Children's Foundation by the local rotary clubs.

St John’s Scout Group Ashbrooke is looking for volunteers. If you are interested in working with children and young people between the ages of six and 18, contact [email protected] for details of this and other Beavers, Cubs and Scouts groups in the Sunderland area.

Andrea Outram is holding an event at St John’s Church, Ashbrooke, called Messy Church. It is on Wednesday, June 22, after school from about 3.30pm to 3.45pm. There will be lots of crafts, lots of mess and lots of fun. Tea will be provided for the kids with just a donation for food. Finishing time is 5.30pm. This year’s parish barbecue at St Cecilia’s and St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Ryhope Road, will take place on Saturday, July 2, in the church hall, starting at 7 pm. Tickets, £6 adults; £3 children, are on sale after mass at the church. Vince Harris will be providing the music. There will be dancing, food cooked by the “gentlemen chefs” of the parish, a bar, raffle and table quiz.

Thornholme Residents’ Association will hold its next meeting on Monday, June 27, at Ashbrooke Sports Club, commencing at 6pm.

Ashbrooke Residents’ Association met recently at the Age UK Building, Stockton Road, with Mary Todner in the chair. Residents were joined by St Michael’s ward Councillor Michael Dixon, plus Gentoo Officers, Caroline Johnson, Stuart O’Neal and Jackie Pitt. A variety of issues were raised by residents concerning their neighbourhood. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 1, same venue, at 5.30pm.

Friends of Backhouse Park and Barley Mow Park invite you to another of their events taking place on Monday, June 20, in Backhouse Park. Learn about local wildlife and the environment from 12.30pm to 6pm. Chris, from OPAL environmental surveys will be holding fun, free-learning sessions, lasting about one hour each. Bats, owls and water voles are all in the park but where are they? The signs are there if you know what to look for. There will be tea, coffee, and maybe some cake. St Aidan’s Church, Ryhope Road, Grangetown, is holding a garden party in the grounds of the vicarage this Saturday from 2pm to 4pm. There will be a draw, bottle stall, cakes, refreshments, bouncy castle, face painting for children and much more. Admission is 50p.

Friends of Backhouse Park and Barley Mow Park will hold their next meeting tonight at the Back-on-the-Map building, ex-Hendon branch library, at 6.15pm.

St Michael’s Councillors, Michael Dixon, Robert Oliver and Peter Wood, will hold their next ward surgery on Wednesday, June 22, at the Stockton Road United Reformed Church, junction with Belvedere Road, from 10am to 11am.

Northumbria Police will hold its latest Pact on Tuesday, June 28, at Auckland Homes, Hill View Road, at 6pm.
