Last year the Wearside Rotary Clubs of Cleadon, Seaburn, SR1, Sunderland, Washington and Wearside worked together under the leadership of Wearside Assistant Governor, Fiona Swan, to stage a Dragon Boat event at Hetton Lyons Country Park in September. For this event the Great North Air Ambulance was identified as the main benefiting charity. At the last meeting of Seaburn Club representatives of the Dragon Boats organising clubs gathered at the Marriott Hotel for a presentation given by Janet Hume, of the Great North Air Ambulance. Janet spoke of the valuable work done by the organisation at the site of accidents with medics now equipped to carry out surgical procedures at accident sites. Crucially Janet pointed out that the air ambulance work relies solely on charity donations to be able to operate. No NHS, state or Lottery funding is received. At the end of the evening, Fiona Swan presented Janet with £1,200, which was raised by the Dragon Boat event. For more information on Rotary, contact Tony Wortman on 01915484450.
