Fulwell, Roker and Seaburn - Down Your Way

On Saturday, June 4, a civic service was held at St Peter's Church, Monkwearmouth, to mark the 1,300th anniversary of the departure of Abbot Ceolfrith taking the Codex Amiatinus, the single volume Latin Bible that had been created at the twin monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow, as a gift to Pope Gregory in Rome. A new shorter version of the Codex Amiatinus, which has been created by schoolchildren in Sunderland and South Tyneside, was then taken across the River Wear by boat.

On June 8 the pilgrimage south began, local train company Grand Central donated tickets for six children individually representing every infant, primary, secondary, special educational needs, Catholic and Jarrow school from Sunderland to King’s Cross. Then the delegation from Sunderland and Jarrow travelled to see the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby at Lambeth Palace where it was signed and blessed in readiness for its journey to Pope Francis in Rome later this year.

Fulwell WI will meet on Tuesday, June 21, in Fulwell Community Centre, Chapman Street, at 7.15pm. Speaker Stuart Miller will talk about Lola Montez, exotic dancer. Table-top will be handbags.

Sunderland Community Lecture will be held at the University of Sunderland in the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s. Speaker will be Ewan Allinson with a talk entitled A Carrollian Cannonball Canyon. The remarkable world of Mowbray Park has a world class asset – the cannonball concretions of the Building Hill quarry face. This free lecture starts at 2.30pm, registration at 2pm in the Prospect Building.

Roker Crafts will meet from 1pm to 3pm in Roker Methodist Church hall. Each session is led by a member of the group. On Friday, June 24, Pat and Linda will lead a collage session. Tale along a basic craft kit (pen, pencil, fine scissors and a cutting board) and any textured or otherwise interesting coloured papers. Ring 5495878 for more information.

Sunderland North Business Centre runs free play sessions for children aged eight to 10, who may be bored and want something to do, the sessions are held at the Seaburn Centre on Fridays from 4pm to 5.30pm. Sessions for young people aged 11 to 19 are held on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm. Other sessions for 11 to 19-year-olds take place in Monkwearmouth Academy on Mondays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm.

Wearside Field Club will meet tonight at 7.30pm in Fulwell Community Centre, Chapman Street, Fulwell. Speaker Vera Baty will be Looking at Buildings in Liverpool. Bookings will be taken for this month’s walk at Hexham, led by Stuart Miller, also for the July walk at Leyburn, led by Stuart Miller. It will be (Leyburn 1940s weekend). All are welcome.

Seaburn (Men’s) Probus Club will meet in Roker Methodist Church, at the junction of Lonsdale Road and Roker Park Road, tomorrow at 10am. New members would be very welcome to see what the club has to offer.

All Saints’ Ladies’ Fellowship will meet in the vestry meeting room at All Saints’ Church, Fulwell Road, tomorrow at 7.45pm, for a strawberry fair.

Due to Bank Holidays and Summer vacations Monkwearmouth Local History Group will be on holiday in this month, July and August. The group will recommence on Monday, September 5.
