Wearside Field Club will meet on Tuesday, September 13, at 7.30pm in Fulwell Community Centre, Chapman Street. Speaker John Yearnshire will talk about The Great Train Robbery. Bookings will be taken for this months walk at Alnwick, led by Brian Gray. The October walk will be Five Parks Newcastle, led by Brian Gray. Meet at Park Lane Interchange at 10am. All are welcome.

All Saints’ Mothers’ Union will meet in the vestry meeting room at All Saints’ Church on Monday, September 12, at 2pm for a prayer service.

Seaburn (Men’s) Probus Club will meet in Roker Methodist Church, at the junction of Lonsdale Road and Roker Park Road, tomorrow at 10am.

All Saints’ Church will hold its monthly coffee morning in the vestry meeting room on Saturday from 10am.

Roker United Reformed Church Fellowship meets on Tuesday, September 13 at 2pm for a ‘Get Together’. All are welcome to join them.

All Saints’ Sunday School resumes on Sunday at 10.30am in All Saints’ Vestry Meeting Room.

The recently restored First World War Acoustic Mirror, off Newcastle Road, just past Pulman Volkswagen, was built in 1917 after the Zeppelin attack in April 1916. It is one of only six acoustic mirrors built during the First World War that is still standing. Local History volunteers and costumed interpreters will be on hand to answer any questions on Thursday from 9.30am to 4pm as part of the Heritage Weekend event.

Ballroom dancing has re-started at the Naval Club in Roker Avenue on Wednesdays at 8pm. Entrance is £1.50.

All Saints’ Ladies’ Fellowship will meet in the vestry meeting room at All Saints’ Church, Fulwell Road, tomorrow at 7.45pm.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of year 1966 at Monkwearmouth Grammar School, a reunion party at the Queen Victoria Hotel, Harbour View, on Friday, September 16, has been organised by Martin Howey and Susan Cunningham (nee Patterson). The event starts at 7.30pm with full bar, buffet and music. Pupils of 1966 are all welcome. Martin and Susan would be grateful if any friends or family of the class of ’66 could pass the information on to those living away from the area. Sunderland Volunteer Life Brigade, Pier View, was founded in 1877 as a life-saving service and is one of only three Volunteer Life Brigades left in the country. It will be open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm each day as part of the Heritage Open Days event.

Fulwell ward surgery will be held in Fulwell Library, Dene Lane, on Saturday from 10.30am to 11.30am when ward Councillor Howe or Councillor Francis and Councillor Beck will be in attendance.

St Andrew’s Church, Roker, will be open on Saturday from 10am to 12.30pm and Sunday from 1.30pm to 4pm as part of the Heritage Open Days event. St Andrew’s was built in 1906/7 and described as the arts and crafts cathedral of the north. It includes work by Burne Jones, William Morris and stained glass by Payne.

At St Peter’s Church, Monkwearmouth, St Peter’s Way, an Anglo-Saxon church and one of the first stone built churches (674AD) built will also be open as part of the Heritage Weekend events. Visitors will now be able to appreciate the size of the original monastery, thanks to a new landscaping that replicates the original Benedict Biscop era footprint. It will be open on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 10.30am to 3pm each day.
