Former Sunderland player charged with rape

Midfielder Cabral, real name Adilson Tavares Varela, is due to appear in court after being accused of attacking a woman whilst he played for SAFC.
A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “We can confirm Adilson Tavares Varela was arrested on January 25, 2015, and was subsequently charged with rape on June 24, 2015.”

Hide AdThe former Swiss international, now with FC Zurich, has already made appearances at Newcastle Crown Court and is due to appear again next month.
He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape, with the trial due to begin on April 25.
Cabral, 27, from Cape Verdi, signed for SAFC in the summer of 2013 and played two games for the club.
On February 2 last year Sunderland confirmed that Cabral had left the club by “mutual consent.”
