Manchester City defender Lucy, who is a former pupil of Alnwick’s Duchess’s Community High School, said she is delighted and thrilled to appear on the show, in the 28th episode of its 45th series.

Her mum Diane added: “They filmed it a couple of months ago, but she won’t tell me anything about the result. It was filmed in Salford and she enjoyed it.

“A teacher at the high school had been saying he would know Lucy had made it if she ever got on A Question of Sport, so it is a special event to do.”

Lucy shot into the spotlight last year thanks to her goal-scoring heroics at the Fifa Women's World Cup in Canada, which helped the Lionesses to a historic third-place finish.

She capped a fantastic 2015 by being named Vauxhall England Player of the Year and was named on the 12-person shortlist for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Bronze played for Sunderland Ladies in the 2009 FA Women's Cup final defeat to Arsenal.

In 2010, she signed for Everton, before joining Merseyside rivals Liverpool in 2012.

Two years later, she moved to current club Manchester City.
