Flytipped rubbish fire spreads to shed as spare of arson attacks continue

Peterlee Fire station’s Red Watch was called to the rear of Brandlings Court in Shotton Colliery earlier this week following a report of a blaze.

The incident is one of a series of deliberate fires which have been started in the village in recent weeks, with fires also reported in the Peterlee and Horden area as bins, skips and trees have been set alight.

Last week, an operation backed by the service and Durham County Council was run by Durham Constabulary in a bid to drive down antisocial behaviour.

A spokesperson for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said: “This incident was an allotment shed and a large quantity of illegally fly tipped waste, this fire was started deliberately.

“Reports of a fire in the open came into CDDFRS control at 8.24pm on Tuesday, June 1.

"One appliance from Peterlee attended.

"On arrival crews found a large amount of rubbish and a garden shed alight.

"Crews extinguished the fire using hose reel and left the scene at 9.16pm.

"Deliberate fires delay us from attending more important incidents.

People are being encouraged to report illegally flytipped waste to the council through http://www.durham.gov.uk/flytipping.
