Five years wed for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - the best moments

1) The balcony kiss - William and Kate kissed not once but twice on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on their wedding day.

Kate, in her Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen lace wedding gown, and William in his distinctive red tunic as Colonel of the Irish Guards, delighted the crowds with their public display of affection.

It was a long journey to the altar for the couple, who met at university. They split and reunited in 2007, and their lengthy courtship saw Kate dubbed Waity Katie for her patience as she bided her time until William eventually proposed in 2010.

The marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton on April 29 2011 was seen as a major boost to the future of the monarchy.

2) Royal rivalry - The Cambridges are known for their competitive streak - whether it's scrabble or sport, they both like to win. On their first official overseas tour as a married couple, William and Kate competed in a dragon boat race on Prince Edward Island in Canada.

William was victorious, but gave his wife an affectionate hug after her team lost out by just a few metres.

3) With the boss - It was during the Diamond Jubilee year of 2012 that William and Kate were pictured on a rare joint engagement with the Queen.

They accompanied the monarch on an awayday to the East Midlands - the Duke of Edinburgh was missing, recovering from a bladder infection.

Elizabeth II, flanked by the nation's future king William and future queen Kate, waved to the crowds from the balcony at the Council House in Nottingham.

The Duchess has described how the Queen has been a "gentle guidance" since she joined the royal family, while William said his grandmother has been a powerful female influence in his life.

4) Olympic Gold - William and Kate could not contain their excitement when, at the London 2012 Olympics, they watched Britain win the men's team sprint in the Velodrome. The dressed-down Duchess, in white polo shirt and skinny jeans, jumped up and flung her arms around William in delight.

Whereas the older generation of royals - particularly the Queen - are known for their emotional reserve in public, Kate and William showed they favour a more natural approach.

5) Dancing in the South Pacific - Overseas tours sometimes required visiting royals to get properly stuck in with what's going on. In Tuvalu in 2012, William and Kate - who was the more natural mover - got to their feet to dance with locals at a gathering of island chiefs.

The couple shimmied, swayed their hips and waved their arms while dressed in brightly coloured skirts. The night saw them beaming, laughing and joking with each other and William summing it up as ''an amazing evening".

6) Two become three - It was dubbed the "Great Kate Wait" by media gathering outside the Lindo Wing for news of the royal arrival. The birth of the Duke and Duchess's first born sparked intense coverage around the world.

Prince George of Cambridge - third in line to the throne and a future king - finally arrived on July 22 2013. The baby prince - with his fingers on show as he carried out his first royal wave - made his debut wrapped in a blanket, held by his proud parents on the hospital steps. Kate described it as a "special time".

7) A baby daughter - Princess Charlotte, fourth in line and a spare to the heir, was born just over two years after her older brother George.

Dressed in a cream bonnet, the baby princess was first seen outside the Lindo Wing when she was only 10 hours old, with Kate looking fresh in a yellow and white floral print Jenny Packham dress despite having just given birth a few hours before.

William and Kate named their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana - honouring both the Queen and William's late mother Diana.

8) Charlotte's christening - In what looked like a scene from the 1950s, the Cambridges walked to church in Sandringham for Charlotte's christening, with toddler George holding William's hand and the princess being ferried by Kate in a vintage Millson pram which the Queen used for two of her own children.

It gave well-wishers their first glimpse of the family of four in public together.

9) The Bond premiere - The world premiere of the new 007 movie in October 2015 highlighted the glitz and glamour of royal life as William, in a Bond style tuxedo, and Kate, in a a flowing, ice blue Jenny Packham gown with a daring sheer back, wowed the crowds on the red carpet at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

10) At the Taj Mahal - In 1992, the Princess of Wales sat alone in front of the Indian monument to love - where a single Prince of Wales once promised to return with a bride, but failed to do so. By the end of the year Diana and Charles had separated.

Twenty-four years later, their son William and his wife Kate poignantly sat in the very same spot, making "new memories" during a tour of India and Bhutan.

Their happy relationship is viewed as a world away from the marriage of Charles and Diana.

The decision to take their place on the bench in front of the Taj Mahal was seen as a significant royal milestone - an acknowledgement by William of his mother's association with the stunning building, but an attempt to move on.
