First look: RAF-themed Sunderland pub reopens after £75,000 revamp

This afternoon the historic pub, just off the A1290 opposite Nissan, pulled its first pint for punters under the ownership of Sunderland-based Tavistock Hospitality Limited.

The firm, who also operate the Roker Hotel, has ploughed more than £75,000 into the venture, which has created 20 jobs.

Only last year the century-old pub underwent a major refurbishment in the theme of RAF Usworth, which once stood on the site of the nearby aircraft museum.

The pub has retained its proud military theme, but changes have been made in a bid to attract more custom.

The venue is now part of the Sonnet 43 Brew House family of pubs, with craft ales produced at its own brewery in County Durham, as well as original spirits from sister distillery Poetic License in Roker.

There is also a new menu, which is described as “modern British with a twist”, which will be available in the coming days once the kitchen has been refurbished.

The reopening is the first phase in the redevelopment of the site which will continue in the spring when bedrooms are created on the first floor for a boutique B&B offering.
