Fireworks seized after business breaches explosives licence

Fire safety officers have seized fireworks from a business they found to be breaching explosives rules.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is preparing for one of its busiest periods of the year as Bonfire Night approaches, with adverts, campaigns and officers and firefighters out getting the message out on safety.

The agency tweeted today to say action had been taken against a business in Wearside which had failed to play by the rules.

"Our Fire Safety team have seized fireworks from a business in Washington for breaching the terms of the explosives licence," read the tweet..

"Another seizure happened from a home in Felling where we believe fireworks were being stored and sold illegally. Investigations continue."

No further details have yet been released about the seizures.

Trading Standards chiefs have warned people to beware of "dubious" firework sellers in the build up to November 5.

Council staff, together with the fire service, are responsible for checking approved retailers are storing products safely. They also make sure stores don’t sell to under-18s.
