Fires at derelict Sunderland pub on Bonfire Night prompt investigation

An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of two Bonfire Night blazes at a derelict Sunderland pub.

Firefighters were called to the building on Knollside Close on Thursday, November 5. They were then called a second time in the early hours of Friday, November 6.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Shortly before 5am today (Friday) we were alerted by the fire service to a blaze that had started at the derelict Inn Place, on Knollside Close, Sunderland.

“Nobody was injured. Inquiries are ongoing with the fire service to determine the circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire.”

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were first called at 10.04pm on Thursday. Five of its crews and an aerial ladder platform attended.

The building was 50% damaged by fire and smoke during the first blaze.

Crews left just before 11.30pm on Thursday but hours later, at 2.50am, there was a second call.

Three crews and an aerial ladder attended and left at 6.45am on Friday.
