The lucky pet’s owner raised the alarm shortly before noon.

“We took a call from the dog’s owner to say it was in the river close to the Bella Italia restaurant,” said County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service group manager Andy Bruce.

“He could actually hear the dog but could not see it.

“We sent a couple of appliances and one of our water incident managers. The dog was in the water but covered by bramble bushes and weeds.

“It was just a small dog, like a Jack Russell and the steepness of the bank meant it could not get out.

“They managed to get hold of it by the collar and dragged it out through the bushes.”
