No one was hurt in the incident although there were concerns for livestock in the field. Luckily the livestock was also unharmed.

Watch manager Mick Corfield said: “At approximately 1800 hours we attended a large grass and gorse fire, which was at the rear of Peterlee Football Club.

“What concerned me the most was that there was a large amount of livestock in the field. Luckily the wind was blowing in the opposite direction.

“The information I gathered at the time was that youths from the age of 13 to 16 had started the fire.

“I need to make youths aware in the Peterlee and Horden area that this is unacceptable behaviour.

“They need to also be aware that this is a criminal offence and has a massive impact on us as a fire service.
