Fire crews tackle blaze near Sunderland's Northern Spire bridge

Firefighters are tackling a blaze on the banks of the River Wear, close to the Northern Spire Bridge.

Crews were called to the scene of a fire in a derelict building on the south side of the river shortly before 4pm today, Saturday, June 5.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “The call came in at 15.51 this afternoon.

"We have sent two fire appliances to the scene, one each from Marley Park and Sunderland Central.

"It is a derelict building on the riverside.”
