Fire at Komatsu Factory in Sunderland - Flames pour through chimney as firefighters called to factory fire

Emergency services were at the scene of a fire at a Sunderland factory as pictures show smoke and flames coming through the chimney.

A fire has left areas of a Sunderland factory “severely damaged”, as flames and smoke poured through the chimney at Komatsu in West Quay Road on Tuesday afternoon (March 2).

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: “The fire was confined to the paint booth, extraction system and chimney, which were 80% severely damaged by fire and heat.

“The remainder of the factory was 20% slightly damaged by smoke.”

Emergency services were first called at 3.50pm.

Crews from Farringdon, Sunderland Central and Marley Park stations attended the scene of the fire alongside the aerial ladder and two officers.

Firefighters left the scene just after 6pm and the blaze has been tackled, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed.
