Family pay tribute to 91-year-old grandad who died after being hit by a car

A family have paid tribute to their “much loved” dad and grandad, Terry, who sadly passed away in hospital after being hit by a car.

The family of the elderly man, James Terrance Hewitt, known locally as Terry, who died following a collision in Chester-Le-Street paid tribute to him on Tuesday, December 10.

He was hit by a Ford Fiesta on Front Street, in Chester-Le-Street shortly after 8.30am on Tuesday, December 3.

The 91-year-old, who is from Chester-Le-Street, was attempting to cross from once side of the road to the other when the collision took place.

Emergency services attended the scene and a double-crewed ambulance took Terry to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary after he suffered serious head injuries.

Sadly, he passed away a few days later.

In a statement, his family have said: “It is with deepest sympathy that we announce the death of our father, James Terrance Hewitt, known to many as Terry, who was involved in a tragic collision in Chester-Le-Street.

“He was a much loved father and grandfather and will be sadly missed.

“We wish to thank everyone for their support and ask to be left so that we can grieve in peace.”

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident remains ongoing and Durham Police gather their evidence
