Family of killed teenager launch personal appeal for information

The Echo reported yesterday how Kane Howey Scales’ loved ones are still searching for answers as to exactly how he died.

A police investigation into the collision concluded it was an accident and no charges were brought against any of the parties involved.

A subsequent inquest held almost 18 months after the incident ruled Kane’s death was as the result of an accident.

Yesterday, a Northumbria Police appeal saw the force release five CCTV images of people who visited the Simply Food and Drink store, near the crash scene, on the night Kane died.

Now, lawyer Sefton Kwasnik, of Manchester-based BPS Law, acting on behalf of Kane’s parents, has made his own appeal for witnesses who may have been in the area on the night of the accident, to come forward after saying the police appeal “does not go far enough”.

They are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have been in Roker Retail Park at 7.50pm the night Kane was injured, when police were called out to reports of a burgundy-coloured car performing handbrake turns.

Mr Kwasnik said anyone who was in the retail park from between 7.20pm and 8.10pm on that night could help.

There is no suggestion that the burgundy car was involved in the collision.

Mr Kwasnik also said any road users or members of the public who were in the Newcastle Road area on the night could hold clues into the incident.

Appealing to witnesses, he added: “The family would dearly love to hear from them in strict confidence.”
