Family fun on Sunderland seafront

Surf's up on Sunderland seafront today - and you don't even need to get wet.

A surf simulator machine is one of the attractions at a Best of British family fun day running at Roker’s Bede’s Cross, until 4pm today and tomorrow.

The event, which will is being delivered by Sunderland Live on behalf of Sunderland City Council is funded by The Coastal Community Fund.

There is a packed programme of activities, with visitors able to take on the army cadets' climbing wall and an inflatable assault course, as well as craft sessions and face-painting and a ‘bubbleologist' producing amazing giant bubble displays.

Other attractions will include Time Bandits, a professional team of historical costumed interpreters and re-enactors who are dedicated to bring history and have are offering youngsters a glimpse into life as a First World War infantry soldier.

Sunderland Live's Michelle Whittle said: "It has been a bit overcast but the rain has held off and the lack of sunshine certainly doesn't seem to have put people off.

"We have had a steady flow of people all day. The children really seem to be enjoying the craft tent and everybody is enjoying themselves."

Among those braving the surf simulator was seven-year-old Jake Baird, from Ford Estate, who was at the event with mum Rachel.

"He is loving it," she said.

"We did not even realise it was on. We just came down to walk the dog on the beach and saw all the tents up here and came to have a look.

"He's having a great time."
