Families set to travel for less this half-term as ‘Kids Go Free’ returns to the North East

‘Kids Go Free’ is returning across the North East this February half-term.

North East families will have the opportunity to travel for less this February half-term as Mayor Kim McGuinness’ ‘Kids Go Free’ offer returns from Saturday, February 14, until Sunday, March 1.

It means that up to three children aged 11 and under can travel for free on any bus service in County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear when travelling with a fare-paying adult or concessionary passholder.

The popular initiative aims to make public transport more accessible during school holidays to help families enjoy days out across the North East.

Over the course of last summer alone, an estimated 360,000 children travelled for free with a fare-paying adult or concessionary passholder.

Councillor Martin Gannon, Cabinet Member for Transport, has welcomed the return of the ‘Kids Go Free’ initiative for the February half-term.

He said: “Hundreds of thousands of children have already travelled for free using the Mayor’s Kids Go Free initiative, and I’m delighted that it’s back for February half term.

“It’s great that local transport operators continue to work closely with the Mayor on this important offer, which makes the school holidays that bit more affordable for families in the North East.”

A joint statement from North East bus operators stated: “We’re proud to be part of this initiative, which helps parents and carers who want to take children out over the school holidays.

“Days out can be expensive, so this scheme is a great way to cut costs and support families across the North East.”

The scheme offers families a cost-effective way to get around the region, making it perfect for half term trips to local attractions, shopping areas or to visit family and friends.

Cathy Massarella, Managing Director of Nexus, added: “Kids Go Free has been a real success story on Metro, and it’s great to see it extended on the bus again this half term.

“It’s a fantastic offer that makes public transport more affordable for families in our region.”
