Everton 3 Sunderland 0: Match report, Black Cats run over by Calvert-Lewin double

The 20-year-old, a hero for England in the the World U20 Cup triumph in the summer, finished with aplomb with goals either side of the interval at Goodison Park.

And sub Oumar Niasse sealed it late on with a superb piece of control and a finish to match.

Simon Grayson's side offered little going forward. In fact, they offered little full stop.

Grayson made six changes to his team for the trip to Merseyside, with Jason Steele, Billy Jones, Donald Love, Darron Gibson, Jack Rodwell and Lynden Gooch all making starts.

There was a new-look defence with Jones alongside skipper-for-the-night Lamine Kone, with Donald love at right-back and Adam Matthews on the left side.

Ronald Koeman went even further for the Toffees, making eight alterations, with Wayne Rooney not involved anywhere in the 18.

Sunderland had the first sight at goal in the sixth minute when a Muhamed Besic mistake let in James Vaughan who went just wide of Maarten Stelelenburg's left upright from the edge of the box.

However, any attacking action thereafter took place in away territory.

Jones made a good block on a Calvert-Lewin shot in the 10th minute before Nikola Vlasic shot into the side-netting six minutes later.

Soon after, Vlasic and Calvert-Lewin combined nicely down the right with Vlasic firing well wide.

Sandro had a well-struck 25-yard free-kick collected by Steele in the 25th minute before Vlasic flashed a left-foot shot wide.

The breakthrough came six minutes from the interval and it was no shock it was CALVERT-LEWIN who broke the deadlock with Everton's first goal for 443 minutes.

Despite being surrounded by Sunderland defenders he showed beautiful footwork before slotting his shot calmly into Steele's bottom left corner.

He doubled his and Everton's tally seven minutes into the second period.

It was all too easy for the Toffees, with Sandro's ball down the left channel releasing CALVERT-LEWIN who used the couple of yards he had on Jones to strike a sweet left-foot

And he was denied a hat-trick in the 59th minute when his firm header from Klaasen's cross came back off Steele's left-hand post.

Sunderland, having won a couple of corners in the second half, reminded the hosts in the 69th minute that they were not totally out of it, with Vaughan going inches wide with a header from Love's cross.

The Black Cats were indebted to Steele for not going further behind on 74 minutes, making an excellent double save to thwart sub Ade Lookman.

Vaughan was proving a threat, going narrowly wide with another header, from Callum McManaman's cross.

Everton put the icing on the cake with their third goal in the 83rd minute - and a beauty at that.

Tom Davies played the ball into the away box where NIASSE controlled it on his chest 10 yards out before shooting right-footed high past Steele.
