EU Referendum: How our reader poll predicted Brexit result

And it's in. Britain will officially leave the European Union - with Brexiters taking 51.9% of the vote.

More than 17 million people voted Leave in yesterday's referendum - and almost 4,000 of our readers predicted the result earlier this month with our EU poll.

The majority North East voters who took part in our poll, with the question "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?" told us that they wanted to leave.

More than 5,200 people answered our question, published on the Sunderland Echo, Shields Gazette and Hartlepool Mail, with 3,828 (73%) readers in favour of a Leave vote.

Ahead of yesterday's referendum, A Vote Leave spokesman told us that the North East "stood to gain a huge amount" if a Leave vote was successful.

They added: "The region is known for its industrial innovation and ambition. When we take back control of our trade negotiations, budgets and immigration policy, we can make sure the North East’s priorities are met.

"Every year, the North East sends £496million to the EU - a quarter of the school’s budget for the region in 2015-2016.

"Just think of what we could do with that money."

The North East region came out strong for Vote Leave, with Newcastle the only place to call out Remain. Voters in Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of London also voted for Britain to be stronger in.
